The Comparison

Mission Brand

Alaffia Everyday Shea

Everyday Shea

Alaffia (full story)

Founded with the mission of empowering women in West Africa, Alaffia sources its natural shea butter from women’s coops that pay fair wages and preserve local culture. Profits are reinvested in a wide variety of social projects – building schools, promoting maternal health, distributing eyeglasses, and planting trees, just to name a few. And without the need to please shareholders, Alaffia can price its products for maximum value.

Mass Brand

Shea butter body lotion from Bath & Bodyworks

Super Smooth Body Lotion

Bath & Body Works

As with Alaffia, shea butter is the primary moisturizer in this body lotion, though the company is opaque on where it sources the shea or how much it pays producers. Bath & Body Works is part of publicly traded L Brands, whose CEO made a reported $4.6 million in 2019. Maybe that helps to explain why this body lotion costs twice as much per ounce – even without the fair trade wages that Alaffia pays to its producers?
